W.D. Ehrhart

W. D. Ehrhart (b.1948) enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 at the age of 17. He fought in Vietnam with 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, receiving the Purple Heart Medal, the Navy Combat Action Ribbon, and two Presidential Unit Citations, and earned the rank of sergeant.

Ehrhart's first published poetry appeared in Winning Hearts and Minds: War Poems by Vietnam Veterans, a 1972 anthology sponsored by Vietnam Veterans Against the War and published by 1st Casualty Press. Since then, he has authored 14 books of prose and poetry, and 10 chapbooks of poetry, and has edited or co-edited four anthologies. Forthcoming in Fall 2005 is Sleeping with the Dead, a handset, letterpressed chapbook from Adastra Press. All of the poems in "A Sort of Peace," his photo-poetry collaboration on the Vietnam War, are from Beautiful Wreckage: New and Selected Poems. More information on his books can be found at his web-site, www.wdehrhart.com.

The influence of Ehrhart's encounter with the Vietnam War can readily be seen in his writing, as our sampling below suggests, but though he is known primarily as a "Vietnam War poet," in fact his subject matter ranges widely. He has written essays and articles on such topics as radio disc jockeys, tugboats on the Delaware River, the Internal Revenue Service, and a variety of modern and contemporary poets from William Wantling to Daniel Hoffman. His wife Anne and daughter Leela are major sources of inspiration for his poetry. His poems also reflect his respect for nature, his love of friends, his active engagement with the world around him, and his consternation at the human condition.

Currently, he teaches English and history at the Haverford School in suburban Philadelphia.
