Ship of Fools and Other Folly When Katherine Anne Porter's best-selling Ship of Fools was published on April Fools Day, 1962, it joined a long tradition of Fool literature. Porter took her title from a moral allegory of the same name published in the fifteenth century, but in the third century St. Chrysostom had lastingly defined the Fool as "he who gets slapped," and even then the slapping had already been going on for some time. . . . |
