9/23/1891     John Masefield's Writing Fever
On this day in 1891, John Masefield began his first sea apprenticeship, at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he deserted ship in New York, vowing to "be a writer, come what might." The high-water mark of a sixty-year career: "I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, / And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by...."
